Union Public Service Commission also known as UPSC conducts Combined Defence Services Examination 2 times in a year. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Combined Defence Services Examination for recruitment of various jobs under Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Indian Military Academy (IMA). The test is conducted at various centers.




CDS SYLLABUS 2015 WITH EXAM PATTERN AND PDF

The Combined Defence Services exam consists of 3 subjects viz. English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. UPSC CDS 2015 syllabus of all these subjects is given below in detail.

1. English Syllabus

Questions in this paper will consist of Reading Comprehension, Synonyms, Antonyms, Para Jumbles, , Jumbled Sentences, Sentence Correction, Error Spotting and Fill in the Blanks.

2. General Knowledge Syllabus

Questions in this paper includes knowledge of current events/affairs. The paper will also include questions on History and Geography of India, India and Neighbouring countries, scientific aspects.

3. Elementary Mathematics Syllabus

Elementary Mathematics Paper will consist of several chapters like arithmetic, basic operations, trigonometry, geometry, mensuration, unitary method, elementary number theory, algebra, statistics etc.

ARITHMETIC:




Number System – Natural numbers, Integers, Real and Rational numbers. Fundamental operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, Square roots, Decimal fractions, time and distance, time and work, percentages, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.

Elementary Number Theory – Division algorithm, Prime and composite numbers, Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11. Multiples and factors, Euclidean algorithm, Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables, Factorization Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M.

Algebra

Basic Operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M. Simultaneous linear equations -analytical and graphical solutions, Simultaneous linear equations in 2 variables, Set language and set notation, Rational expressions and conditional identities, Laws of indices, Theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations and its relations

Trigonometry

Use of trigonometric tables, Questions on heights and distances, trigonometric identities, Sine x, cosine x, Tangent x when 0 < x < 90 degrees.

Geometry

Questions on Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on various topics like Properties of angles at a point, Parallel lines, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square, Circles and its properties including tangents and normal, Loci, Sides and angles of a triangle, Congruency of triangles, Similar triangles, Concurrence of medians and altitudes, Properties of angles.

Mensuration

Areas and volumes of various figures including cones, spheres, cuboids, cylinders etc. Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of Split figures.

Statistics




Collection and tabulation of statistical data, histograms, bar charts, pie charts, Graphical representation frequency polygons etc.

Intelligence and Personality Test
Candidates will also have to appear for Intelligence Tests both verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. This includes group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, brief lectures on specified subjects / current affairs.
Note: Eligible candidates need to pass individually in all tests for clearing the CDS exam.
